RIO TINTO ALCAN

Spent Pot Lining Treatment Pilot Plant
Arvida plant (Quebec) Canada

Project description:

The new Alcan 180M US$ aluminum spent pot lining recycling plant in Quebec’s Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean region is a unique industrial-scale pilot plant which employs 50 people and has a capacity to recycle approximately 80,000 tons of spent pot lining using Alcan’s proprietary technology. The plant includes two major areas; the dry area aimed at the crushing of the spent pot lining and the wet area for the treatment by leaching process. The spent pot lining is a waste from the electrolysis smelters and there is over 650Kt of that waste in the Saguenay region, enough to operate the new plant for 20 years.
